Checkups

A checkup is a physical examination of your teeth, gums, and mouth. Your dentist will check to ensure you do not have any swelling, decay, or disease in your mouth. It’s important that you let your dentist know if you have had any pain or discomfort with your teeth or gums since your last visit. You may hear your dentist referring to numbers during your checkup, this helps us keep a history of the health of each tooth to better track areas of concern. They will also discuss your diet and sleep to understand if vitamin or mineral deficiencies, dietary intolerances, snoring or sleep apnea are affecting your dental and general health. We recommend a checkup every 6 months, with a good at home routine, to keep your mouth healthy.

Professional Clean and Polish

Even with regular brushing you may have plaque or tartar build up so your dentist will use an ultrasonic scaler to remove this, especially in hard-to-reach places between your teeth and gums. Your teeth will then be polished to remove any staining leaving you with clean, shiny and smooth teeth.
A professional clean and polish is usually included with all checkups.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that helps to restore tooth enamel. Your dentist may recommend a topical application during your checkup to strengthen your teeth and prevent bacteria from building up and causing cavities.

Fissure Seals

Fissure seals are a protective coating that can be used to seal the fine grooves and hollows in your molars and premolars. This prevents food and bacteria collecting in the crevices of your tooth, makes them easier to clean and prevents decay. It’s a great option for children as their adult teeth start to grow in to ensure long term protection from cavities.
This is a pain free experience, taking a few minutes per affected tooth and your dentist will let you know if they recommend fissure seals during your checkup.

Mouth Rinses

If you suffer with bad breath, tooth decay or weakened enamel your dentist may recommend mouth rinses.
A chlorine dioxide rinse may be prescribed for you if you have signs of gum disease or inflammed gums.
CariFree Maintenance rinse is designed to help build up your enamel, strengthening your teeth and preventing decay.

Digital X-rays

X-rays are an important part of maintaining good oral health. With a faster processing time, digital storage and less radiation than traditional X-ray film, digital X-rays provide you and your dentist with immediate results. This is critical for accurate and fast diagnosis.
We use Intraoral X-rays at the practice to check for cavities and monitor teeth and bone health. If your dentist suspects concerns with your jaw or other facial bones they may refer you for an Extraoral X-ray.

Gum Disease

The buildup of plaque is not only harmful to your teeth it can also put you at risk of gingivitis and periodontitis (gum disease). Signs of gingivitis may include receding or bleeding gums. Your dentist can provide a clean of your gums to help manage this condition.
If not treated, gingivitis can develop into Periodontitis where the bacteria infect the soft tissue and bone at the root of the tooth. This can lead to pain and mobility of teeth.
Your dentist can provide you with a deep clean to help manage this condition, which if unchecked can rapidly lead to the decline of your oral and overall health.
Periodontitis has shown to have an effect on other parts of the body, the same bacteria has been associated with heart disease and dementia.
